Mahesh Manjrekar is an actor, director, writer and producer. He emerged from the Marathi industry and carved his niche in Bollywood with his directorial debut Vaastav(1999) depicting the plight of those caught in the Mumbai underworld. The film was critically acclaimed and was a hit and won awards like prestigious awards like Filmfare, Screen Weekly and IIFA.
Mahesh Manjrekar feels that Bollywood celebrities are suddenly getting aware about Marathi cinema. However he feels that they should come up with something new and not do the same things that work for them in Bollywood.
He also feels that Marathi film industry has made its mark recently with some very successful and Blockbuster movies like Sairat , Natasamrat and hence he feels that everybody wants to “jump on the bandwagon.”
A few weeks back Priyanka Chopra had produced a Marathi Film Ventilator. Also John Abraham has announced that he wants to make a Marathi Film. Shah Rukh, Rohit Shetty have also said that they want to do a Marathi film. On this Mahesh Manjrekar said that “There is an awareness. But I hope they don’t come and spoil the market by making their kind of cinema,”.
Recently Mahesh Manjrekar was at the Mumbai Press Club’s Knowledge Series to talk about ‘Makeover of Marathi Cinema’. On this occasion he also said that the change started to happen with “Duniyadari” and “Me Shivajiraje Bhosale Boltoy”, prior to this Hindi film industry was not too bothered about Marathi cinema.
Till about 4-5 years back Marathi films industry was not considered as a threat or a business proposition in comparison to Hindi Film Industry. Suddenly they have realized that there is an audience.
Mahesh Manjrekar also feels that the industry “needs one Marathi film to be a hit internationally” so that more doors will be open in the overseas territory.
Dhyanimani released yesterday (10th February) has been widely appreciated by audiences and top actors in Marathi Film Industry.
